Gift a Vehicle to a Family Member in Quebec (2026)

In Quebec, gifting a vehicle to a family member involves a specific tax exemption form (or process), a bill of sale, and a registry visit. Here's everything you need, step by step.

Step 1 — Tax exemption & gift form

Complete Form VD-80.1-V (Declaration of a Transaction Between Related Individuals) at a SAAQ service outlet. QST is waived between related individuals. Qualifying relationships include immediate family and also aunt/uncle to niece/nephew.

Step 2 — Complete a bill of sale (marked “Gift”)

Even for a $0 gift, both parties should complete a bill of sale. Write “Gift” or “$0” in the sale price field. The bill of sale should include the date, year/make/model, VIN, odometer reading, full names and addresses of both parties, and both signatures.

Step 3 — Who qualifies as family?

The list of qualifying family relationships is set by the official program rules for Quebec and is subject to change. Always verify the current eligibility criteria before completing the transfer.

Step 4 — Complete the transfer at SAAQ

  • Bring the completed gift form (or sworn statement) as required by Quebec.
  • Bring the signed bill of sale marked "Gift."
  • Bring the signed vehicle ownership/registration documents.
  • Both parties bring government-issued ID.
  • Safety inspection: not required from the seller in Quebec to complete the transfer (confirm current rules with SAAQ).
  • The seller removes their licence plates before handing over the vehicle — plates stay with the donor.
