Legal Disclaimer

Not a law firm. Not legal advice.

Guidepost is not a law firm and does not provide legal services or legal advice. The document templates, process guides, checklists, and other materials available on this site are provided for informational purposes only.

Nothing on this site creates a lawyer-client relationship, a paralegal-client relationship, or any other professional advisory relationship between you and Guidepost.

Templates are not substitutes for legal advice.

The documents you download or generate through Guidepost are templates intended to cover typical, straightforward situations. They are not tailored to the specific facts of your situation by a lawyer. Every transaction is different, and a template may not address your circumstances correctly.

If your situation involves a dispute, an unresolved lien, unusual terms, or any complexity — consult a licensed lawyer or notary in your province before completing the transaction.

Provincial requirements change.

Laws and administrative procedures in Canadian provinces change over time. Guidepost makes reasonable efforts to keep its guides and templates current, but we cannot guarantee that every piece of information reflects the most current requirements in your province. Always verify current rules with your provincial registry or a qualified professional before completing a transaction.

No liability for errors or omissions.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Guidepost and its operators are not liable for any loss, damage, or liability arising from your use of, or reliance on, any content, document, or guide on this site. You use this site and its outputs at your own risk.

Consult a professional for complex situations.

We strongly recommend consulting a licensed lawyer, notary, or qualified professional in your province if:

Vehicle Sales

  • There is a lien or outstanding loan on the vehicle
  • There is a dispute between buyer and seller
  • The vehicle has been in a significant accident or has undisclosed damage history

Home Sales & Purchases

  • The transaction involves a new build (HST/GST rules differ significantly)
  • There is an existing mortgage, lien, or title encumbrance
  • The property is a strata/condo unit in BC (additional documents required)
  • Any conditions on the offer are unusual or contested

Landlord & Tenant

  • You are serving an above-guideline rent increase notice
  • The eviction involves a dispute about the facts
  • The tenant has lived in the unit for more than 5 years
  • The situation involves domestic violence, mental health, or other protected circumstances

Employment

  • You have been offered a severance package or release to sign
  • Your situation involves human rights complaints or workplace harassment
  • You are a federally regulated employee (banks, airlines, telecoms)
  • The termination involves non-competition or non-solicitation clauses

Separation & Family Law

  • You have significant assets (pension, business, investment properties)
  • Children are involved and parenting time is contested
  • One or both parties are in Quebec (distinct civil law system)
  • There is a history of domestic abuse or power imbalance

Disability Tax Credit

  • CRA has previously denied your DTC application
  • Your condition is episodic or variable in severity
  • You are claiming under the Cumulative Effect pathway (multiple impairments)

Small Claims

  • Your claim is close to or may exceed the provincial limit
  • The defendant is a corporation or has legal representation
  • The dispute involves intellectual property, privacy, or human rights

Start a Business

  • You are incorporating with multiple shareholders
  • The business is in a regulated industry (financial services, health, food, construction)
  • You need a shareholders' agreement or partnership agreement

When in doubt, a one-hour consultation with the right professional costs far less than the mistake of getting it wrong.
