Gift a Vehicle to a Family Member in New Brunswick (2026)

In New Brunswick, gifting a vehicle to a family member involves a specific tax exemption form (or process), a bill of sale, and a registry visit. Here's everything you need, step by step.

Step 1 — Tax exemption & gift form

Sign a Family Gift Affidavit in person at a Service NB location (per Bulletin PVTB-104). The donor must have already paid tax. Not valid if another family gift on this vehicle occurred in the past 12 months. Note: stepsiblings cannot gift each other under this exemption.

Step 2 — Complete a bill of sale (marked “Gift”)

Even for a $0 gift, both parties should complete a bill of sale. Write “Gift” or “$0” in the sale price field. The bill of sale should include the date, year/make/model, VIN, odometer reading, full names and addresses of both parties, and both signatures.

Step 3 — Who qualifies as family?

  • Bring the completed gift form (or sworn statement) as required by New Brunswick.
  • Bring the signed bill of sale marked "Gift."
  • Bring the signed vehicle ownership/registration documents.
  • Both parties bring government-issued ID.
  • Safety inspection: not required from the seller in New Brunswick to complete the transfer (confirm current rules with Service New Brunswick).
  • The seller removes their licence plates before handing over the vehicle — plates stay with the donor.
