Gift a Vehicle to a Family Member in Manitoba (2026)
In Manitoba, gifting a vehicle to a family member involves a specific tax exemption form (or process), a bill of sale, and a registry visit. Here's everything you need, step by step.
Step 1 — Tax exemption & gift form
Write a Letter of Gift (MPI PDF form, per Manitoba Finance Bulletin 054). The donor must have already paid Manitoba RST. Important: siblings do NOT qualify for this exemption in Manitoba -- a sibling-to-sibling gift is a taxable transfer.
Step 2 — Complete a bill of sale (marked “Gift”)
Even for a $0 gift, both parties should complete a bill of sale. Write “Gift” or “$0” in the sale price field. The bill of sale should include the date, year/make/model, VIN, odometer reading, full names and addresses of both parties, and both signatures.

Step 3 — Who qualifies as family?
The list of qualifying family relationships is set by the official program rules for Manitoba and is subject to change. Always verify the current eligibility criteria before completing the transfer.
See the current eligibility rules at the official Manitoba source →Step 4 — Complete the transfer at Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI)
- Bring the completed gift form (or sworn statement) as required by Manitoba.
- Bring the signed bill of sale marked "Gift."
- Bring the signed vehicle ownership/registration documents.
- Both parties bring government-issued ID.
- Bring a valid safety inspection certificate — required in Manitoba to complete the transfer.
- The seller removes their licence plates before handing over the vehicle — plates stay with the donor.
