Selling? A lost certificate does not stop an eligible sale.

SAAQ states that the certificat d'immatriculation is not proof of ownership ("le certificat d'immatriculation n'est pas un titre de propriété"). A private transfer runs through SAAQclic as an account-based transaction: the seller starts it using the buyer's identification number from their driver's licence, not by handing over the certificate. SAAQ says a transfer can now be done "sans avoir à se déplacer vers un point de service". So a lost certificate does not by itself stop an eligible sale, and you can reprint it free from SAAQclic anyway.

If the registered owner has died

A succession or inheritance transfer is one of the cases SAAQclic cannot handle. The liquidator of the succession must go to a service outlet with the successor or new owner, so both attend together. Bring proof of death: a death certificate issued by the Directeur de l'état civil, an obituary, a coroner's report, or a burial certificate. A Declaration by the Liquidator of the Succession form is part of the process.

Selling the vehicle? Sell a car privately walks the rest of the transfer, and what to do when someone dies covers the wider estate paperwork.
