If your ODSP file is suspended or closed
What has to happen before income support can be suspended, what the directive says about getting it released again, and who can come back to ODSP without going through a new disability adjudication.
“How long before ODSP cancels my file?”
The directive stops at suspension. It does not publish a number of days between a suspension and a file being closed, so neither does this page. What it does publish is the process that has to happen first: a request for information, a response window, an extension where more time is reasonable, and written notice of what is outstanding.
So the useful question is not how many days are left. It is which of those steps has already happened, and what is outstanding.
If your support is already suspended
If your income support has been suspended, contact your local ODSP office right away and ask exactly what information is outstanding and how to send it.
The eligibility review comes first
An eligibility verification review asks a recipient to submit information so the office can confirm eligibility or the accuracy of entitlement.
How long you get to respond
Two weeks is provided to the recipient to submit the information.
That window can be extended: a test of reasonableness should be applied to determine the amount of additional time allowed to obtain the necessary information, and the directive notes that people with disabilities may require additional time.
That second sentence is worth reading twice, because the two weeks is not the end of it. If getting a document takes longer than two weeks, say so, and say why, before the window closes.
What has to be true before a suspension
Suspension of a recipient’s income support may only be imposed after all of the following conditions are met:

the information or documentation requested is essential for the determination of eligibility or the accuracy of the entitlement
- 2
the recipient has been given notice of what information or documentation is outstanding
- 3
the information or documentation is within the ability and power of the recipient to obtain
And afterwards
Where reasonable efforts have been made and eligibility is met, income support should be released.
Coming back: rapid reinstatement
Rapid reinstatement lets some former recipients return to ODSP without a new disability adjudication, if they are financially eligible.
Who the directive names
- ✓people who were adjudicated as a person with a disability and had no medical review date, regardless of how long they have been off ODSP
- ✓people who were adjudicated with a medical review date, who return and have the disability review scheduled later
- ✓people who were grandparented from the former Family Benefits Act, effective September 1, 2017
Who it does not cover
People who were terminated from ODSP as a result of a medical review that determined they no longer qualified as a person with a disability, or for failing to submit their Medical Review Package, are not eligible for rapid reinstatement. They have to reapply, with a full adjudication.
A separate rule about the application itself
No new application is required if the Application for Assistance Part 1 is less than one year old or was updated within the last 12 months.

People who were terminated as a result of a medical review that determined they no longer qualified, or for failing to submit their Medical Review Package, are not eligible for it and have to reapply with a full adjudication. Separately, no new application is required if the Application for Assistance Part 1 is less than one year old or was updated within the last 12 months.
