Before you pay for a used car in Alberta, search its VIN at Alberta PPSA Search. The search costs $10.00, takes minutes, and shows whether a lender still has a registration against the car. This page explains what a lien is, how to run the search yourself, and what the result does and does not tell you.
1
What a lien is, and why it follows the car
Open this section ↓A lien means the seller borrowed money against the car and hasn't paid it back. If you buy a car with an undisclosed lien, the lender can legally repossess it from you, even though you paid in good faith. This is the single most important thing to do before buying.
A registered lien follows the vehicle, not the seller. The secured lender can repossess the car even from an innocent buyer who paid in full. Paying out the loan and obtaining a lien release is the seller's obligation, and selling a vehicle with an undisclosed lien is illegal.

What the result says, and what it does not
The result lists registrations against the VIN, or none. It is not a history report and not an opinion on the car.Open this section ↓The result lists registrations against the VIN, or none. For each one it records the secured party, the registration date, the expiry and the collateral, as the registry holds them. A registered security interest generally survives a private sale unless it is discharged, so a registration that shows up is the seller's to clear before you pay.
It does not tell you whether the car was in an accident, what the odometer read last year, or whether recalls were fixed. A vehicle history report is a separate purchase from CARFAX Canada; this order does not include one. And it is not an opinion on the car or the price: it is a record of what the registry holds on the day it was searched.
Keep the result with your bill of sale. It is your record that you searched before you paid.

Common Questions
How much does a lien search cost in Alberta?Open this section ↓↑ Close this sectionHow much does a lien search cost in Alberta?
Alberta PPSA Search charges $10.00 for a search, verified 2026-09-16.
Can a car I bought be repossessed for the previous owner's loan?
Yes. A registered lien follows the vehicle, not the seller. The secured lender can repossess the car even from an innocent buyer who paid in full. That is why confirming and clearing the lien quickly matters.
Does a lien search tell me if the car was in an accident?
No. A lien search shows registrations against the VIN in Alberta: the secured party, the registration date, the expiry and the collateral, as the registry records them. Accident history, odometer readings and service records are a vehicle history report, which is a separate product. A vehicle history report is a separate purchase from CARFAX Canada; this order does not include one.
What if the VIN on the car does not match the ad or the registration?
Walk away. The VIN on the dash, the door jamb sticker, and the registration must all match. A mismatch can indicate a stolen vehicle or a tampered plate.
