MPI Transfer of Ownership Document: what it is and how to fill it out

Looking for the download? There isn't one — Manitoba's Transfer of Ownership Document is on the back of the vehicle's registration card. Flip the card over.

What it is — and who needs it

The TOD is the transfer section printed on the back of the Manitoba registration card. In a private sale the seller signs it over, and the buyer needs it — together with the bill of sale and the Certificate of Inspection (COI) — to transfer ownership at an MPI Service Centre. Manitoba requires the COI for private sales, so it isn't optional paperwork.

Common mistakes

  • Hunting online for a “TOD form” — it’s the back of the registration card, not a download
  • Arriving at MPI without the COI — Manitoba requires the Certificate of Inspection for private sales
  • Sellers skipping the Notice of Sale — the separate filing (online or in person) that removes your name from the registration
  • Forgetting the bill of sale — the TOD transfers ownership, but the bill of sale documents the transaction

What happens after it's signed

Buyer: take the signed TOD, bill of sale, and COI to an MPI Service Centre to complete the transfer. Seller: submit your Notice of Sale to MPI (online or in person) and return your plates — plates stay with the seller in Manitoba. Field-level questions? Common Questions

What is the MPI Transfer of Ownership Document?

Manitoba's TOD is the ownership-transfer section on the back of the vehicle registration card — not a separate downloadable form. The seller signs it over to the buyer; the buyer needs it to transfer ownership at MPI.

Where do I get a TOD form?

You already have it — it's printed on the back of the vehicle's registration card. If the registration card is lost, that's a replacement-registration conversation with MPI before the sale can complete.

What does the buyer take to MPI?

The signed Transfer of Ownership Document, the bill of sale, and the Certificate of Inspection (COI) — Manitoba requires a COI for private sales. The buyer completes the transfer at an MPI Service Centre.

What is the Notice of Sale, and is it different from the TOD?

Different documents, both matter. The TOD transfers ownership to the buyer; the Notice of Sale is the seller's own filing with MPI (online or in person) that removes the seller's name from the registration — the companion step Manitoba sellers shouldn't skip.
